Gaia Hernández Reixach, a Bachelor’s Degree student in Video Game Design at the University of Burgos, has been awarded the Best Scientific Poster prize at XR Salento 2026, an international conference recognized as one of the leading events in the field of Extended Reality (XR) and immersive technologies. The conference was held in Otranto, Italy.

The award-winning project consists of a virtual recreation of the historic Enigma K cipher machine, designed to provide an interactive experience that helps users understand how this iconic encryption device, used during World War II, worked. Through virtual reality, users can explore the machine’s mechanisms and learn the fundamentals of cryptography in an engaging and immersive way.

The project was developed as part of Hernández Reixach’s Bachelor’s Thesis under the supervision of faculty members at the University of Burgos, in collaboration with the Burgos Military Museum. Once development is completed, the application is expected to become part of the museum’s permanent exhibition, highlighting the potential of immersive technologies as powerful tools for preserving and communicating historical and scientific heritage.

The recognition received at XR Salento 2026 represents an important international achievement for both the project and the University of Burgos’ academic programs in video game design and immersive technologies. It also showcases the ability of its students to develop innovative solutions with practical applications in education, culture, and science communication.
